As the world braces for the pivotal 2024 elections, tech giant Google has unveiled its proactive strategy to counter misinformation using generative AI. Acknowledging past challenges faced by big tech companies in combating false narratives during elections, Google aims to enhance transparency and curb misinformation, particularly focusing on the upcoming U.S. presidential election.
In response to the growing concern of election-related misinformation, Google outlined a comprehensive plan encompassing various aspects. From advertising disclosures to content labels, the tech giant’s primary focus is on limiting responses to election-based queries on its generative AI tools. This includes Google Bard, its chatbot, and the Search Generative Experience (SGE).

Scheduled to take effect early next year, the specifics of the restricted queries remain undisclosed. Google, however, emphasized proceeding with caution regarding election-related uses in 2024. The tech giant’s move positions itself as a leader in the industry, taking steps to tackle misinformation propagated through generative AI.
While Google’s plan remains somewhat vague, it surpasses its competitors in the generative AI realm. OpenAI, Google’s major competitor, recently enhanced its tools to combat disinformation but hasn’t committed to restricting specific election-related uses. The industry anticipates more tech companies adopting transparency measures as critical elections approach.

Beyond restricting generative AI queries, Google is extending transparency measures across its platforms. YouTube creators will soon be required to disclose the use of “altered or synthetic content” in their videos. This aligns with Google’s existing ad transparency policies, compelling political advertisers to disclose the use of altered or synthetic content in ads.
The focus on responsible AI usage in elections isn’t limited to the U.S. Google acknowledges the global significance of 2024, with other nations like India and South Africa gearing up for national elections. This aligns with the broader trend of major tech companies, such as Meta, taking steps to ensure transparency and accountability in digital advertising.
As technology continues to play a pivotal role in shaping political landscapes, Google’s preemptive measures reflect a commitment to ethical AI practices. The emphasis on transparency and responsible AI usage sets a precedent for the industry.
