Duolingo’s recent decision to leverage GenAI tools, including ChatGPT, has prompted a restructuring, resulting in the conclusion of contracts for 10% of its translation contractors. A spokesperson from Duolingo cited the company’s evolving content creation operations and the efficiency of AI as reasons for the reduction in the contractor workforce. Despite claims that these changes aren’t layoffs, social media backlash indicates concerns among employees and users about job security and the potential impact on the quality of language lessons.
Duolingo’s CEO, Luis von Ahn, previously highlighted the company’s ongoing use of GenAI to enhance product personalization and engagement. The integration of AI, particularly OpenAI’s GPT-4 technology, has allowed Duolingo to introduce Duolingo Max, a premium tier offering AI-generated feedback and conversations in non-English languages.
