Thank you for asking. It all started when I was training to become a physician. A mentor noticed my knack for technology and suggested that the future of healthcare would be driven by technological advancements. This advice resonated with me, and I pivoted from medical training to biomedical engineering. I completed my education in this field and later complemented it with a business degree. My career has spanned academia, industry, startups, and consulting, leading me to where I am today – spearheading AI programs at Medtronic.
AI is a rapidly evolving field that has the potential to transform healthcare as we know it. From robotics to imaging modalities, AI-driven technologies are providing insights and capabilities that were previously unimaginable. I’m particularly excited about the role of AI in personalized medicine. As we move towards a future of healthcare that is customized to individual patient characteristics, AI will be instrumental in creating adaptive and responsive algorithms that can significantly improve patient outcomes.
AI and machine learning are becoming foundational skills, much like mathematics. My advice to aspiring professionals is to focus on the application of AI in the domain they are passionate about. It’s not just about mastering the algorithms; it’s about understanding how to apply them to real-world problems in your chosen field. Specialize in the application, and bring your AI knowledge to enhance that area.
Currently, AI applications in healthcare are largely focused on managing diseases based on data from healthcare settings. However, as we collect more data from wearables and consumer technology, we will be able to shift towards managing health and preventing future diseases. This broader dataset will enable AI to become more predictive and personalized, which is a game-changer for the industry.
Robotics is set to play a significant role in healthcare, particularly in surgical procedures. Medtronic is investing heavily in this area, with advancements in both hard tissue and soft tissue robotics. In the next five years, I expect to see robotic-assisted procedures becoming commonplace, leading to better patient outcomes, reduced recovery times, and more efficient hospital operations.
Responsible AI is a cornerstone of medically regulated AI applications. It encompasses beneficial use, safety, efficacy, fairness, quality, accountability, human control, privacy, security, and transparency. As we develop AI solutions, we must adhere to these principles to ensure that the technology we create is ethical and serves the greater good of patient care.
Certainly! I’ve been using AI to analyze data from my son’s go-kart races. By downloading telemetry from his kart’s computer, I’m attempting to construct ideal laps and optimize the car’s setup for better performance. It’s a fun application of AI that combines my passion for technology with my role as a supportive parent in my son’s racing endeavors.
I believe that generative AI will be a key component of Healthcare 5.0. In the future, we could see a healthcare system where every aspect of treatment is personalized to the individual patient. By combining deterministic models with generative AI trained on extensive medical data, we can create digital twins that predict the best treatment options for each patient. This level of customization and precision is the future of healthcare, and generative AI will play a pivotal role in making it a reality.
