One of the widely used Natural Language Processing tasks in different business problems is “Text Classification”. Text classification is a Machine Learning technique that assigns a set of predefined categories to open-ended text. It is widely used in various tasks such as understanding audience sentiment from social media, detection of spam emails, auto-tagging of customer queries, etc.
In this DataHour session, Ria will discuss what are the different types of AI-based text classification systems along with their advantages, disadvantages, and applications. She’ll also be presenting one of her recent papers on text-based classification: Application of Machine Learning to Identify Health and safety risks (Lattice journal, Volume-3, Issue-1 (January – March 2022)

Ria is a leader and a mentor in the field of Data Science and Machine Learning. She had been working at Oracle for the past 3 years until March 31st, 2022, driving end to end development and launch of Oracle Construction Intelligence Cloud Service, a new suite of artificial intelligence (AI) and analytics applications to enable informed project decisions in the engineering and construction industry.
She has earned her thesis-based Master’s degree in Bioengineering from the University of Hawaii at Manoa and has worked at WaferGen Biosystems and Biocon Bristol Myers Squibb Research & Development Center, prior to joining Oracle.
She is passionate about leveraging the power of data science and machine learning to enable end-users to take practical and actionable decisions. She has multiple US patents in the field of Machine learning and NLP. She has also been the recipient of Analytics India Magazine’s 40 under 40 data scientist award.
