Spot’s New AI-Driven Abilities

In a video shared by AI expert Santiago Valdarrama, Spot can be seen answering natural language questions, such as “Are you standing?” and “What is your battery level?” To accomplish this, the robot dog first utilizes OpenAI’s ChatGPT to gather information and then relies on Google’s text-to-speech AI to vocalize the response.

Valdarrama explained the importance of ChatGPT in the process. He stated, “At the end of each mission, the robots capture a ton of data. There’s no simple way to query all of it on demand. That’s where ChatGPT comes in.” The video, filmed at Levatas’ lab, also depicts Spot answering mission-specific questions like, “Spot, how many inspections in your next mission?” and “Describe your last mission.”

Enhanced Capabilities and Practical Applications

Spot has an impressive capacity to carry up to 14kg of equipment, execute repeatable missions, gather data, navigate various terrains, conduct thermal inspections, and detect radiation, among other abilities. Integrating AI into the robot’s capabilities has raised concerns among some who fear the potentially apocalyptic consequences of such advanced technology. However, Valdarrama addressed these fears on Twitter, asserting that “90% of the comments were people talking about the end of civilization. Meanwhile, 99% of data scientists are still figuring out how to split their tabular datasets.”

Customizing ChatGPT for Spot the Robot Dog

Integrating ChatGPT into Spot required the development of specific terms and routines to ensure seamless functionality. The final result is an imposing and interactive robot that can provide valuable feedback and accept commands. While AI progresses in various fields, including filmmaking and art, concerns about potential human job displacement persist.

Microsoft’s Design Principles for ChatGPT Integration

Microsoft published a paper in February detailing design principles for integrating ChatGPT into robotics. The company’s announcement highlighted the significance of this development. It states, “We believe that our work is just the start of a shift in how we develop robotics systems.” Microsoft also hoped their efforts would inspire other researchers to explore this exciting field further.
