In a report titled “Hope, Fear, and AI,” The Verge has unveiled the results of its latest “Trust Survey,” shedding light on the opinions and perceptions of American consumers regarding artificial intelligence (AI). Teaming up with Vox Media, the research aimed to delve into the rapid ascent & widespread adoption of generative AI tools. This is the fourth installment of the Trust Survey series on attitudes toward big tech, following studies conducted in 2017, 2020, and 2021. This collaboration sought a comprehensive understanding of how adult Americans utilize and contemplate AI.
Drawing from a sample size of over 2,000 individuals surveyed in April 2023, Vox Media partnered with The Circus, an insightful data storytelling consultancy, to uncover various crucial insights. The research delved into topics such as the usage of AI tools among Americans and the AI tools driving the fastest adoption. It also studied people’s perceptions of AI’s potential disruptions in the workplace, desired societal changes in response to AI, etc.

The Hope, Fear, and AI report revealed that one in three Americans aged 18 and above has already utilized generative AI tools. AI has become a dominant topic of conversation, with 44% of the surveyed Americans reporting that AI is mentioned “several times a week” in their discussions. Notably, AI conversations are most frequent among Generation Z, with 61% encountering AI-related discussions regularly.

The survey findings also shed light on consumer expectations regarding AI usage. A resounding 78% of respondents expressed their desire for clear disclosure of AI usage in digital content. This highlights the increasing importance of transparency and accountability in the realm of AI-driven technologies. Consumers want to be informed & empowered, making informed decisions about the AI systems they interact with on a daily basis.

Nearly half of the surveyed consumers (47%) believe AI will significantly or moderately disrupt their respective sectors. This finding underlines the growing recognition of AI’s transformative potential across various industries. As AI continues to evolve and permeate different aspects of work, professionals are preparing for the changes that lie ahead. Moreover, the research indicates that 69% of respondents believe society must undergo substantial changes to adapt to a post-AI world.

Edwin Wong, Senior Vice President of Insights & Innovation at Vox Media, remarks on the recently increasing prominence of AI. He highlights that two-thirds of Americans express a strong interest in the topic, perceiving AI to have a larger impact than other emerging technologies. AI’s significance is on par with breakthroughs in solar power and electric vehicles. This finding underscores the growing fascination and recognition of AI’s transformative potential in shaping the future.
