In a crucial move reflecting the global race for dominance in artificial intelligence (AI) technology, NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang has affirmed the company’s commitment to prioritizing Japan’s soaring demand for AI processors. This commitment aligns with Japan’s ambitious endeavors to revitalize its semiconductor infrastructure and make significant strides in AI technology development.
Jensen Huang, in a recent statement, acknowledged the overwhelming market demand for NVIDIA’s AI processors in Japan. During a press briefing at Prime Minister Fumio Kishida’s official residence in Tokyo, Huang highlighted the urgency, stating, “Demand is very high, but I promised the prime minister we will do our very, very best to prioritize Japan’s requirements for GPUs.”
Japan, once a global leader in semiconductor technology, is on a mission to rebuild its prominence in the industry. The country is investing heavily in its semiconductor infrastructure to catch up with the rapid evolution of AI technology. NVIDIA’s graphics processing units (GPUs) have emerged as dominant players in the AI market, making them pivotal to Japan’s resurgence.
Less than two weeks ago, Japan passed an additional budget allocating a substantial sum of about 2 trillion yen ($13.60 billion) earmarked for chip investment. This financial injection is expected to support critical players in the semiconductor landscape, including Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) and the chip foundry venture Rapidus. Rapidus, notably, aims to manufacture cutting-edge chips on Japan’s northern island of Hokkaido.
Jensen Huang expressed optimism about Japan’s semiconductor industry. He stated, “The industry that Japan is growing will produce GPUs.” This reflects a broader trend where countries, including Japan, recognize the importance of owning their data. They aim to establish AI factories and foster domestic AI intelligence capabilities.
