Replit CEO: ‘We Don’t Care About Professional Coders Anymore’

Imagine building a software app without writing a single line of code. Sounds like magic, right? Well, Replit, the AI-powered coding platform, is making this a reality. In a surprising twist, CEO Amjad Masad says the company is no longer focused on professional coders. Instead, Replit is betting on non-coders—people who’ve never written code but can now create software using simple prompts.

This shift comes after a breakthrough with Replit’s new tool, Agent, which lets users build apps just by describing what they want in plain English. Launched in September, Agent has been helping Replit grow its revenue five-fold in just six months.

Agent’s success was made possible by Anthropic’s Claude 3.5 Sonnet, a model that achieved record scores on coding evaluations. This breakthrough accelerated Replit’s timeline for AI-driven software creation, something Masad once thought might not happen until the end of the decade.

The Future of Software Creation

The implications of this shift are profound. AI is democratizing software development, enabling people with no coding experience to build tools tailored to their needs. Masad believes this is a return to the roots of computing, where natural language replaces complex commands. “I think we’re going to see this era of Windows and mice and desktops as totally cringe,” he said.

Replit’s advantage lies not in proprietary AI models but in its eight-year-old technical foundation that simplifies every aspect of software creation. While competitors can access the same AI models, Replit’s platform handles the entire process—from coding to deployment—making it accessible to non-technical users.

Masad’s vision is clear: the future belongs to those who can identify problems and use AI to solve them. “Finding software problems in your life is also a skill,” he said. “Looking at a problem and saying, ‘a piece of software could solve that’ is a skill.”

End Note

As AI continues to evolve, the ability to create custom software will become a normal part of daily life. Professionals who master this skill will have a significant advantage, much like those who are naturally organized or efficient today.
