OpenAI is here with yet another exciting update – Scheduled Tasks in ChatGPT. This new feature is designed to help you automate your daily workflows, set reminders, and stay organized. Whether you’re a professional juggling multiple responsibilities, a student managing deadlines, or someone who simply wants to streamline their routine, scheduled tasks is here to make your life easier.

Currently in beta for ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Team users, this feature allows ChatGPT to create and execute tasks at specific times or on a recurring basis—even when you’re offline. Once a task is completed, you’ll receive a push notification or email, ensuring you’re always in the loop.

How to Use Scheduled Tasks?

Setting Up a Task

1. Access the Tasks Menu: Click on your profile icon and select “Tasks” from the pop-up menu.

2. Choose a Task: If it’s your first time, you can select from suggested tasks or click “Try your own” to create a custom task.

3. Create a Task via ChatGPT: Select “ChatGPT with scheduled tasks” from the dropdown menu at the top of the screen. Then, ask ChatGPT to create a task. For example, you can say, “Remind me about my mom’s birthday on March 13th.”

Once you submit your task, ChatGPT will provide a confirmation. You can manage your tasks, including editing, pausing, or deleting them, from the Tasks page.

Managing Notifications

To enable or disable notifications:

  • Go to your Notifications settings on ChatGPT Web.
  • Choose between Push notifications, Email, or both.

If you’re using a mobile device, ChatGPT will prompt you to grant notification permissions after creating your first task.

Updating Tasks

You can update your task’s name, instructions, and schedule by hovering over the task and clicking the pencil icon. Alternatively, you can use the three-dots menu to pause or delete a task.

Let’s Try Scheduling a Task

I love reading about the latest things happening in the world of AI, and looking for the right sources becomes a problem. So I am going to use this feature for scheduling news updates.

Prompt: Provide me with a daily briefing on the latest news and developments in the world of artificial intelligence. Include breakthroughs, research updates, industry trends, and notable announcements. Deliver the briefing every day at 3 PM.

Output:

Observation:

This is amazing! Not only did I get all the latest AI news and sources in a single, easy-to-read list, but the news was also neatly segmented into categories like ethics, industry developments, event, etc.

Examples of Daily Task Automation

Here are 10 simple examples of how you can use ChatGPT’s Scheduled Tasks feature to automate your daily routines and stay organized:

  • Daily News Briefing: “Give me a summary of the top 5 news stories every morning at 7 AM.”
  • Language Practice: “Practice Spanish with me for 10 minutes every day at 6 PM.”
  • Fitness Motivation: “Send me a motivational workout quote every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 6 AM.”
  • Meeting Preparation: “Prepare a summary of my team’s weekly goals every Monday at 8 AM.”
  • Weather Updates: “Send me the weather forecast every morning at 7:30 AM.”
  • Learning New Skills: “Teach me a new Excel shortcut every Tuesday and Thursday at 5 PM.”
  • Meditation Reminders: “Remind me to meditate for 10 minutes every day at 8 PM.”

Usage Limitations

  • You can have up to 10 active tasks at any given time. To create a new task, you’ll need to pause or delete an existing one.
  • Tasks in ChatGPT use GPT-4o, so your plan’s usage limits will apply.
  • Features like voice chats, file uploads, and GPTs are not yet supported in scheduled tasks.
